In Season: Tomatoes

August 5, 2011

  • Tomatoes are naturally juicy and at their prime in the summertime. The high water and mineral contents in foods like this, combined with both vitamins A and C, help keep you hydrated.
  • The lycopene in tomatoes gives you natural sun protection from within (but don’t count on it for complete sun protection if you are prone to burning!).
  • Tomatoes also contain salicylic acid, a natural pain reliever that can help diminish headaches and stress.

However, if you suffer from inflammation (Arthritis, Lupus), you may want to stay away from tomatoes, which are part of the Nightshade group. Nightshades (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant, peppers and tobacco) pull calcium from the bones and deposit it in the joints. On the brighter side, eating cheese with the foods listed above helps replace calcium to the bones. Or be sure to combine nightshades with mineral rich foods, such as leafy greens.
