Are You Addicted To Diet Coke?

You are not alone, but if soda is something you are still consuming on a regular basis, now is the time to take a look at why. I used to drink Diet Coke, because I thought of it as a pick-me-up: something to drink in the afternoon as a treat, to wake me up. After learning a bit more about what this substance actually is, I started to pay more attention to how my body was feeling when I wanted soda. Here’s how I broke it down:

Diet coke is sweet, bubbly and contains caffeine. So which of these three things was I actually looking for?

  1. Bubbles: If you want something carbonated, go for sparking water. I love grapefruit flavored Perrier and Polar makes a ton of different flavored seltzers.
  2. Sweet: Fruit is always an ideal choice or treat yourself to one small cookie or a piece of dark chocolate. At least baked goods contain real ingredients (butter, flour, sugar) as opposed to artificial sweeteners.
  3. Caffeine: Drink tea or have an espresso.

 

Now I’ll tell you why you shouldn’t be drinking Diet Coke in the first place!

  • It doesn’t meet any of the criteria for food: whole, fresh, organic, local, seasonal…strike one, two and three! Shall I continue?
  • It is a highly processed food
  • It has no nutritional value
  • It is highly acidic: For all of you who think a Diet Coke will cure your hangover or sooth your stomach, I hate to break it to you, but you are wrong.
  • It contains dye (caramel color)
  • It contains highly processed sweeteners: High Fructose Corn Syrup and Aspartame. The neurotoxin Aspartate is a major component of the artificial sweetener Aspartame (i.e. toxic to your brain!)
  • It never goes bad: The longer the shelf life, the shorter the human life.

 

Nutritional Information: Calories 0, Fat 0g (0%), Sodium 40mg (2%), Carbohydrates 0g (0%), Sugar 0g, Protein 0g (0%)

Notice all the zeros, doesn’t that make you raise any eyebrow?
