FIVE KEY PANTRY SWAPS

July 6, 2011

Trail Mix: unsweetened coconut flakes, dried cherries, almonds and cocoa beansOUT: Table Salt

WHY: Sodium

IN: Moderate amounts of mineral rich sea and Himalayan salts

OUT: Highly processed oils

IN: Cold-pressed olive, coconut and sesame

OUT: White Sugar

WHY: Acid-forming, nonnutritive and addictive

IN: Maple syrup, raw honey, brown rice syrup

OUT: White Flour

WHY: Stripped of nutrients, bleached

IN: Whole grain flours (wheat, brown rice, quinoa)

* Better yet, eat as many whole grains as possible, before they are broken down to flour!

OUT: Bars

WHY: Processed, loaded with sugar, partial food, fortified with additives

IN: Fruit, Nuts, Grains

* Eat an apple with natural peanut butter instead of a fruit and nut bar. Make your own trail mix, but make sure the dried fruit doesn’t have added sugar. My favorite combination includes: unsweetened coconut flakes, dried cherries, almonds and cocoa beans.
